Lesson 9: Effect & Affect

Now, what are the difference between them?Let's look.

The first word "affect" is a verb.The second word "effect" is a noun.right? That's the first difference.

So the word "affect" is the verb refer to when you change someone or something.

The second word effect is the noun refer to a change happen because something else happens.Right?.I know it sounds a litle bit confusing but look at some examples and I hope you understand them a little bit.

so, when we're talking about changes, we could be talking about all kinds of changes, right?

So, we could be referring to physical change, mental change, psychological or any other kind.

Let's me give you an example: Smoking affected the condition of his lung.Right?

I use the verb "affect" in the past tense, affected.

We could use the same example and use the noun: "Smoking had an negative effect on his lung."

Sometimes when we say the word negative, we can also use the vocabulary word "adverse": Smoking had an adverse effect on his lung."

Ok, Let's take another example, mental was something affected mentally, right?

"Staying up all night affected his concentration" right?Staying up all night affected his concentration.If we change it, we could say "Staying up all night effect...has strong...sorry, I'm sorry.."Staying up all night had a strong effect on his concentration."Now we use the noun instead of the verb.

If we give an example of the psychological and nature, we could say " Loosing her grandmother at her early age affected the young child."Loosing her grandmother affected the young child. We use the verb, correct?Or we could say "The lost of her grandmother had a negative effect on the young child."Now we use the noun, ok?*Hay là chúng ta có thể nỏi rằng" Việc mất bà khi còn nhỏ có ảnh hưởng tiêu cực tới đứa trẻ."Khi này, chúng ta sử dụng danh từ đúng không?[/dich]

So as you can see, they are also spelled differently, /ei/ and /i/, the verb "affect" is spelled with /ei/, the noun "effect" is spelled with /i/, alright?

So, two little words but one more way in which you can improve your English once you understand the difference between two.
